The guys that do the gdgt weekly podcast (they also work for engadget and gizmodo) confirmed it as well so more than likely, its true. Now once again we sit and wait for microsoft to confirm news we already know.

I almost want to be surprised...like MS is actually keeping something secret and when they officially demo the HD everyone will be "wow...it has netflix streaming" (or some other feature).  All these leaks are really anticlimactic.

Good to hear Tegra is confirmed.  It's a powerful chipset, and should definitely give MS the lead in terms of raw performance vs Apple.  Smooth menus with tons of flashiness is definitely something that will catch the eye.

Tegra getting 4 times faster next year

Nvidia?s Tegra has hardly hit any devices yet, but their General Manager is already talking about the future of the processor, with chips being planned for 2010 which have 4 times the performance of current devices, while maintaining the same low power as current generation devices

While this may be true, I would imagine that anything of this nature probably wouldn't appear until late next year, which means that it wouldn't start popping up in consumer products in 2011. Kinda sucks to get such a clear view of inevitable obsolescence, but it's nothing new in the world of tech.

now if we can get some more info...such as xbox live gaming capabilities, etc.  If it's sporting the Tegra, I sure hope they plan to use it!

So what are the real advantages of nVidia's Tegra?

I know the biggest talked about feature has been 720p video playback with HDMI support (via dock). Yesterday, iFixIt and Rapid Repair learned that the new iPhone is running a S5PC100 from Samsung which handles 720p video playback with HDMI support. (via Engadget)

I know Apple currently uses nVidia exclusively in their MacBooks, so I see no reason they wouldn't have looked at the Tegra for their handhelds. What other benefits does the nVidia Tegra bring?

Battery life, mostly. (And I assume this is probably the real reason it was chosen.) This thing uses very little power, and according to Nvidia, that gets 130 hours of audio (That is what they said awhile ago, Nvidia now says 25 DAYS, which seems unrealistic.) and 10 hours of HD video. I also beleive Nvidia has advertised its low cost as well. (Even so, the lowest-end vertion of it, the one that will probably be in the Zune HD, is as powerful or more powerful than the iPhone 3G S while getting much better battery life.)

I suspect Apple didn't use it because it only supports Windows CE and Android.

I'm sure it is and I'm sure it does... that's the way technology works. The Zune HD which is being released almost six months after the iPhone 3GS had better be better. Not to mention the power needed to keep a cellular radio connected to cell towers, you know in case a phone call comes in.

What confuses me now is this 100 hours of audio playback. You can make that claim for a device, but for a chip? What size battery does it use? Because it's been reported several times that Apple's iPod touch uses a small battery in order to get a slim form factor. A larger battery would obviously mean longer playback.

Then there's always the 2009 iPod touch which we've yet to see. The 2008 iPod touch was clocked considerably faster than the 2008 iPhone. I don't think it's going to be derivative of the iPhone this year... but maybe so.

Nvidia says their battery claims are for devices, not the chip itself, I believe.

That's my point. There isn't a standard battery size for every device. A phone will use more battery on other feature like the radio. An iPod touch has a smaller battery to cut down on size. So without knowing that the device in question wasn't a prototype with an extremely large battery capacity, it's hard to say what the actual Zune HD will get.

For example, the current iPod touch get 36 hours audio and 6 hours video while the iPhone 3G gets 24 hours audio and 7 hours video.

Device      iPod Touch     iPhone 3G
Audio36 hours24 hours
Video6 hours7 hours

Those two devices use the same processors. But due to the battery and other hardware get very different results (video is better on one, audio is better on the other). I'm simply saying, nVidia is pushing it by citing results on battery life - I'm going to guess they're the best results achieved and a device with WiFi is probably going to get noticeably less.

Still we have nothing to compare because we haven't seen the actual 2009 MP3 player lineup from Apple or Microsoft.
