Since the new dock works with the 30 or 80 I'd guess it'd work the other way too.....but again it's only a guess.
Of course the old dock might need some foam or something to hold the thinner 80 in place securely.

The new dock is not good, the usb cable is built into it, and it cheaper looking and cheaper quality build.

Bummer, I saw them at walmart and considered getting one as I don't have a dock yet. Of course I'm going to stick with my 30 for a while so I guess I'll opt for the cheaper/smaller old dock.

Will all the old cables work...like from the travel pack or A/C pack?
I've noticed them on sale at different places, and if they both work, it might be worth it to save $50 or so.

The Zune uses that USB connection for charging, too. You plug the USB into the AC adapter. I think the idea is that, if you want the dock near your PC, you just plug into the PC's USB (and get faster sync that way anyways). If you want the dock somewhere else, you plug it in with the adapter so it'll charge and sync wirelessly. A dock without ANY cables isn't a dock -- it's a stand.

AUTOMATIC wifi sync happens if your Zune is docked somewhere besides the PC, like your TV. You can manually sync without it being plugged in at all.

Yeah, this pretty much means that it's not a good idea to bother using it, unless you feel like fashioning something to prevent damage to your dock's plug and your Zune's port.

The new dock comes with faceplates that you have to switch to accomodate the different Zunes, so I dunno if the old dock will be able to hold the newer models.

The old dock can accomodate new Zunes. Here's what Zune Dock documentation says: The Zune Dock's removable insert can accomodate future Zune models. To change inserts, press the release button and lift the insert out.The question I have is where to get inserts for the new zunes to use with the old dock?

The inserts should come with the Zune itself, just like the iPods' do, so that one doesn't have to buy a separate part again to dock it properly.

I think the real question, thenumberdevil, is whether MS will actually produce the new inserts. Since they've changed the look of the accessories, I think there's a nonzero chance that they won't actually make new inserts and instead try to steer people to the new style. Then again, they're clearly going out of the way NOT to stick it to early adopters, so maybe we'll get lucky.
I think the old dock is cool and unique (that's why I've got two of 'em), but I like the sleekness of the new one, too. I'll probably pick up the new dock when I get around to buying an 80.

I added a comment about this on Cesar's blog ... let's hope he reads the comment or this forum thread and gets an answer for us!
