Or, they *will* be able to with the Nov 13 firmware update.

This is great news, especially as there'll be more families with multiple Zune players once the new generation of players comes out on Nov 13. Now, three players can enjoy the freedom of unlimited Zune Pass downloads - under a single subscription.

Yes!

Very generous. That's $5 per month now, per Zune, for unlimited access to the vast majority of their catalog. If they publicize this right, they'll have a huge marketing bullet point. Unfortunately, they came out with the newest commercial instead. Angry

Further thoughts on this:  One important aspect McSofty is building with the Zune is, for lack of a better term/method, networking, like Cell phone companies do by providing unlimited calling between users on the same network.  Two things the Zune has that grafts into the whole networking benefits are wifi sharing and now more prominently the Zune Pass.  Random sharing sucks, but if you have a close friend with a Zune, sharing can work fairly well, throwing out some song you discovered or a wallpaper you found that he/she can keep.  In that way it's beneficial to get friends to buy a Zune as well and so on. The other thing that opens up the networking aspect even more is the Zune Pass.  Just tonight we were setting up my Dad's new woot Zune I snagged for $80.  I was showing him how the Pass would work between us and my brother was looking at the Zune a little more closely than I'd seen him. He's got an iPod and he's happy with it, but he actually liked the browny once he saw it in person and was holding it.  He started to see if I'd sell it to him. Made me laugh. But with this development with the three Zunes per Pass, we could all enjoy all the music we want for $5 a piece.  Not only that but I think I may have a buyer for my old Blackie once I get me an 80. The Pass would seal the deal for him. That's incentive.

That alone creates fairly solid consumer loyalty with benefits like that, plus creates a very easy way for multiple users/families to experience music in a nice cohesive easy to use package.  Anyway, I like what I'm hearin'

Jander's post hits on something that I believe has been overlooked: the viral impact of Zune Pass at a household level.

In other words: once one member of a household has a Zune with a Zune Pass... it becomes attractive for other household members to choose Zune for their next players... given that they can then load up with unlimited music by piggy-backing on the existing Zune Pass.

You'd be nuts not to.

Jander and Harvey:
You guys have it exactly right. In fact I personally know 4 families that would switch to use the Zune Pass even though they currently don't subscribe. At $5/month this is an automatic no-brainer best deal ever!

Although it is generous to offer THREE players per Zune Pass, the problem is that the total number of Zunes in a household is not limited to three - and there doesn't seem to be a way to increase it. I'm already a three Zune family, and that is without my three children getting one! The next step is to open it up to more household Zunes, or have a reasonable add-on fee for extra Zunes ($3.95/month extra for every Zune over three?).

Good plan ... our household is a 3 Zune family and we'll soon become a 5 Zune family!

I didn't get the impression of it; she's even moving it at the beginning with the Zune pad.

I think it was TRULY innovative.  Anywho, what's that white piece on the top of the Zunes; you can see it at http://www.zunejourney.net when you rotate it to see the top.

I think I read somewhere that it's to facilitate the wireless function - needed so that the metal backing doesn't interfere with the signal? Not sure though.

Yes, thats what it does, unfortunately. I'm sad to see the zune take the shape more of the ipod in having a metal backing that will scratch most likely, but I have played with the touch ipod and a corner of it on the back is cut out of the metal and there is rubber there instead, for the wireless. An unfortunate flaw.
