Zune Wireless Sync to your PC

In November 2007, Microsoft released its 2nd-generation Zune players. With those players came a firmware update that allows Zune players to be synced wirelessly to your PC.

We tested a pre-release version of the Zune 80 and Zune 8. Hit the video below to see the wireless sync in action:

The screenshots and photos below show how simple it is to set up and use wireless sync with your home wireless network. Click on any of the screenshots to see a full-size version.

Setup

To set up wireless sync, connect your Zune player to your PC and bring up "Wireless Sync" under Zune software's Settings panel. It will display nearby wireless connections. If necessary, you can go to Advanced Settings to specify an SSID and other network information.

If it's a protected wireless network, you'll be prompted for a network key. It'll then connect to your wireless network...

... and that's all it takes to configure your Zune players to sync wirelessly with your PC.

Zune 2 software

To initiate a wireless sync, just plug your Zune device into any power source. Or, select "sync now" from the Wireless menu on the player.

Zune 2 user interface

The first time you connect wirelessly, you may get a "Found New Hardware" wizard. Let it search for the software, and install automatically once it finds "Zune Wireless".

Your player will automatically connect to your network and sync with your PC.

I was one of those who questions how useful a wireless sync might be. I can tell you now, it's a convenient and powerful feature, and you can't take it away from me. No more running down to the home office to get my latest podcasts before I leave for the airport!
